Trent University Forensic Science Camp Hosts First International Camper
Erica Uhlenhop Travels From Dubai for Forensic Science Camp
The first of two sessions of the Trent Forensic Science Camp is underway at Trent University this week with over 30 campers ranging in ages from 13 to 17, including a new camper who has traveled all the way from her home in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
“I love forensics and there is not a lot to offer in Dubai,” said a very enthusiastic Erica Uhlenhop when asked why she chose the Trent Forensic Science Camp. “My mom and I looked on Google and we found this camp so I decided to come. The camp is really fun and I’ve met lots of great people so far.”
Erica is the first of two international campers to be drawn to the camp this year. In August a student from Hong Kong will travel to Trent to experience the unique program.
The camp is in its ninth year of operation, led by Trent University Forensic Science alumna and current graduate student Vanessa Nicholls. Under the guidance of her master’s program supervisor, Dr. Chris Kyle, Ms. Nicholls has been the coordinator of the Forensic Science Camp for the past two years.
“I’m extremely excited about the campers having the opportunity this year to work in Trent’s Crime Scene House,” said Ms. Nicholls. “My favourite part of conducting this camp is seeing the reactions of the campers when they get to see and process their own crime scenes.”
The camp aims to provide a keen understanding of forensic science practices by using a hands-on approach to engage campers in a wide variety of scientific methods with the aid of Trent University’s state-of-the-art DNA and Chemical Sciences Buildings as well as the new Crime Scene House. The second session of the 2010 Forensic Science Camp is August 22 to 27.
The Forensic Science program at Trent University was established in 2004. The original program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science (B.Sc.F.S). Building on the success of the B.Sc.F.S. program, in September 2009 Trent launched a joint major honours degree in Forensics and became the only university in Canada to have such a program. In this new academic stream, students can choose a joint major in forensics plus a complementary subject that leads them to an honours B.A. or B.Sc. degree.
