Athletes of the Week
Trent University is proud to announce that Jeff McDiarmid is the Riley's-Junction male Athlete of the Week for the week of November 14. Mr. McDiarmid played very consistent rugby on the weekend continually making big plays in pressure situations. His efforts were recognized by the coaches as he was named a Tournament All-star on the weekend. His accomplishments in-season were also recognized last week when he was named to the OUA All-Star team and nominated for the Division Rookie-of-the-Year award. Second year Trent athlete and Peterborough native, Mark Basterfield was awarded the prestigious Claude Saunders award, presented annually to an athlete who has exhibited distinguished and exemplary voluntary services to his club and the sport of rowing. "It's a great honour to win especially considering the other quality nominees. It really is an award I couldn't have won without a great club filled with great teammates," said Mr. Basterfield. Trent University Head Coach Carol Love was a recipient of the President's Award. The President's Award is presented annually at the discretion of Row Ontario, based on notable accomplishments and services to rowing. "We chose Carol for this honour in 2005 for her successful leadership of our Canada Summer Games team. As head coach, she selected an excellent coaching staff, organized a well-attended series of training camps and trials, and set a positive tone for the team. This resulted in an unprecedented nine gold medals, three silvers and one bronze out of 14 rowing events in Regina. These results show Ontario to be true leaders in athlete development in Canadian rowing, thanks in large part to Carol's low-key but highly effective leadership style," said Row Ontario's Executive Director Patrick Okens. When asked about the awards ceremony, Head Coach Carol Love said: "It was a great honour for both me and our club. It was also great to see Mark rewarded for all his hard work. Mark is the Trent University Liaison on the Peterborough Rowing Club. He is a great leader that inspires others to succeed as he goes about his job and just gets it done." Carol has just begun a two-year term as Row Ontario's Vice President Coach & Athlete Development. Trent Fencing Earns More HardwareSt. Catherines, ON- The Trent University fencing team competed at the Brock Invitational Sunday, November 13. Continuing with their impressive start to the season, Trent brought home a pair of bronze medals. Hector Sarne earned a bronze medal in the men's foil competition as he defeated teammate Tyson Shennett in the semi-finals. Tyson went on to finish in fifth place out of 73 competitors. In the women's foil, Tamar Walsh earned a bronze medal as she defeated teammate, Megan Murrant in the semi-finals. Megan also went on to finish in fifth place out of 53. "The team was very excited as these are some good early season results for us. It was a bit unfortunate that our athletes had to face each other in the elimination rounds. If we had a luckier draw I think we could have pulled out another medal or two," said Head Coach David French. These two medals bring Trent's total to six medals on the season. After finishing in 10th place at the Ontario University Championships, Ms. Merilainen defeated many of her opponents from that race, as she was only the fourth OUA runner to cross the line at the CIS Championships. "Jutta ran a gutsy race, right from the start as she stuck with the lead pack and hung on. It was a very fast pace and she showed why she's one of the top runners in the country," said Coach Richard Borek. In the men's 10km race, Zekarias Habtmichael finished in 42nd place with a time of 32:25. "The men's race was incredibly strong as over 60 runners broke the 33 minute barrier. Zack was only the third freshman to cross the line which is quite an accomplishment," added Coach Borek. Beth Wightman from the University of Toronto was the individual women's winner with a time of 16:43 while the University of Guelph won the women's team title. On the men's side Christiano Mauricio won the individual title in a time of 30:15, and led the University of Windsor to a third straight team title.
