High school students will have an opportunity to understand the inner workings of the United Nations and other organizations such as NATO and IMF, first-hand-through the third annual Trent International Model United Nations Experience (TIME) being held at Trent University October 25-28, 2001. Students will learn the issues and crises currently facing the global community, choose a council and country to represent, and prepare working papers and resolutions that state their country's foreign policy. They will then come to Trent and speak, lobby, and debate on behalf of their country, requiring them to be in character and well versed in their nation's policies and beliefs. In addition to giving students the chance to learn about international relations, TIME is also an opportunity for high school students to make inquiries about Universities. They will be able to meet with professors, check out course calendars, learn about campus life, and make inquiries on how to choose majors and courses of study. Through generous support from Trent University's Registrar's Office, TIME is able to facilitate both a political atmosphere and a practical experience. Assistance from the Trent Politics Department, Alumni Association, Nind Fund, College Cabinets, and TCSA is also greatly appreciated. TIME integrates the council simulations with even more events to keep delegates as busy as possible. Media simulations, complete with reporters and press conferences, take place throughout the weekend, as do crisis scenarios that keep delegates on their toes. Workshops and research opportunities are plentiful, and the weekend concludes with a General Assembly where resolutions are presented. The marquee event of TIME is the International Dinner Evening, held in downtown Peterborough at the Market Hall. The Evening features a deluxe banquet, cultural show, keynote speaker, and delegate dance. This year, TIME is delighted to welcome Dr. Joyce Barrett to address the delegates. Dr. Barrett, a retired local physician, has been an active member of Ploughshares and will be sharing her in-depth knowledge on sanctions, as well as personal experiences in Iraq and the former Yugoslavia. Now in its third year, the Trent International
Model United Nations Experience draws schools from across Ontario
to Peterborough. The conference is always open to volunteers
from both the Trent and Peterborough community, whether you have
an interest in politics or just administrative assistance.
