NEW-MUSIC SPECIALISTS, AREA PERFORMERS, FEATURED IN EXTRAORDINARY PRESENCE PERFORMANCE For immediate release: October 16, 2002…concert brings outstanding performers, unique performance art, to All Saints’ Church, Friday evening, October 25. Music of Erik Satie, performance of Unless the Eye Catch Fire, featured works on program. Joy Coghill, winner of the 2002 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in Drama, will perform a dramatic reading of the short story, Unless the Eye Catch Fire, at a special concert devoted to music and performance art inspired by the work of Canadian poet and artist, P.K. Page. Coghill and Ottawa flutist Robert Cram first developed their multi-media piece for the Commonwealth Games Festival in Victoria, B.C. in 1994. They will perform it again in Peterborough and Ottawa before Coghill receives the Governor General’s Award in early November. In the first half of the program, renowned pianist and new-music specialist Eve Egoyan will perform piano music by French composer Erik Satie. This repertoire is included at the special request of Page herself, in whose honour the concert is presented. Egoyan performs frequently in Canada and internationally, and has just completed The Satie Project, a collaboration with Dancemakers in Toronto inspired by Satie’s music. Green and Gold, a song cycle by Canadian composer Jana Skarecky, will be performed by Mary McLoughlin, soprano, and Donald Anderson, piano. McLoughlin and Anderson work together frequently at St. John’s Anglican Church, where McLoughlin is soprano soloist and Anderson is Director of Music. Green and Gold, set to poems by P.K. Page, received its world premiere in Windsor last year. The acclaimed Peterborough Children’s Chorus, conducted by Maureen Harris-Lowe, will open the program with choral settings of Page’s work by Canadian composer Harry Somers and Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson. This unique opportunity to hear new-music and performance art by some of the most distinguished exponents in the field is part of the three-day conference, Extraordinary Presence: The Worlds of P.K. Page, being presented by the English Department of Trent University, October 24-27, 2002. In addition to the concert, the conference includes poetry readings, a book-launch and an exhibit of Page’s visual art, all open to the public.
