Ottawa Firm Backs Award for
Aboriginal Language Studies at Trent University
Trent
University is the recipient of a generous donation from Brascoupé
Peters & Associates, an Ottawa firm which has set up an award to assist
Aboriginal students.
Called the Sarah D. Patterson Award for Aboriginal Language Studies, the
scholarship will be given to an upper year or graduate student who demonstrates
academic excellence and financial need. The award was established in memory
of Sarah D. Patterson, a Mohawk of the Bear Clan who was born at Six Nations
and spoke four languages: Mohawk, Cayuga, Tuscarora and English.
The Sarah D. Patterson Award is a reflection of the importance of Aboriginal
language in the Native Studies program at Trent University. Wanda Brascoupé,
President of Brascoupé Peters & Associates expressed her satisfaction
in establishing the memorial award. "This award is a way my company
can give back to the Aboriginal community and honour my Grandmother who
taught me to be proud of my Aboriginal culture," she said. Wanda
is the sister of Simon Brascoupé who has taught in the Native Studies
Department for 15 years.
David Newhouse, Chair of the Native Studies department at Trent University,
commented on the significance of the scholarship. "This award will
be extremely important in providing encouragement to students who want
to study languages," he said. "I think it is particularly appropriate
that the scholarship will be awarded to a well-rounded student who shows
a keen interest in Aboriginal languages."
The first Sarah D. Patterson Award recipient will be selected in January,
2003.
