||
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Annual Fund Donations Support Students and University Services Tuesday, June 20, 2006, Peterborough Trent University's department of Advancement and External Relations recently announced that over $433,000 has been raised through the 2005-2006 Annual Fund, which consists of donations from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, board members, friends, and corporations. "The generosity of our donors is phenomenal," says Sherry Booth, coordinator of Annual Giving at Trent. "The culture of giving and philanthropy continues to grow which enhances Trent and the experiences of our students. Donors need to know how much their support makes a difference in the lives of students. There's an understanding with our students that our donors truly care." The Annual Fund, which coincides with the University's fiscal year of May 1 to April 30, aims to raise "unrestricted dollars" to support the areas of greatest need. Donors are also able to designate their gifts if there is an area or project that is of particular interest to them. This year, Annual Fund donors have supported eight campus improvement funds, 26 distinct Bursaries, 11 types of awards, 12 different prizes, 20 unique scholarships, nine Library Resources funds, 20 Academic Departments and Colleges, and eight different Athletics and Recreation Funds. Among the programs and services benefiting from this year's successful fundraising is Trent's Walk Home program. Suzanne Hughes, coordinator of the program, is overjoyed by the generosity of donors this year, saying: "Delighted doesn't even begin to describe the feeling." Her program will use some of the funds to purchase new radios to replace aging equipment. The funds will also allow for improvements and increases in advertising the Walk Home program so that more students will be aware of the free services available to them. The Disability Services Office will also benefit from this year's Annual Fund, being able to purchase new laptops to be used for computerized note-taking for students with hearing impairments. Funds will also ensure that final exam support is available for students in need. In terms of fundraising efforts at Trent, the Advancement Office reports an 11 per cent growth Leadership Giving and 15 per cent growth in the number of donors to the Monthly Giving Program. This year marks the fifth year in a row where there has been 100 per cent support by the Board of Governors for the Board of Governors' Leadership Scholarship.
