Trent University Appoints New Dean of Arts and Science

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philosophy Professor Christine McKinnon Takes On Key Administrative Position

Monday, June 5, 2006, Peterborough

Trent University is pleased to announce that, after a widespread national competition, Christine McKinnon, a professor of Philosophy at Trent for over 15 years, has been appointed as the new Dean of Arts and Science.

The Dean of Arts and Science is a member of the senior administration at Trent and is responsible for the leadership and direction of the Faculty of Arts and Science. Key elements of the position include: faculty and staff relations; teaching and learning; and dedication to promoting research. Prior to accepting applications for a new Dean, an extensive review of the position was undertaken.

"I am honoured to be chosen as the Dean of Arts and Science at Trent," said Professor McKinnon. "I am looking forward to working with faculty, staff, students, and senior administration to build on Trent's reputation as an excellent university."

Dr. McKinnon has been a professor of Philosophy at Trent since September 1989 and has been Chair of the Philosophy Department since 1999. She has also served as don and senior tutor at Peter Robinson College and was Acting Dean of Arts and Science in 2002-2003. Professor McKinnon earned her Honours BA in Philosophy from McGill University and her B.Phil and D.Phil from Oxford. Prior to coming to Trent, she held teaching positions at the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto. She has written several noted articles on the topics of moral philosophy and philosophy of mind, and is author of the book Character, Virtue Theories, and the Vices.

"Christine has considerable experience at Trent and she brings to this position an impressive teaching and research record," said Susan Apostle-Clark, Vice-President Academic at Trent. "We are very pleased that she has accepted this position."

Professor McKinnon will be building on the work of Dr. Colin Taylor, whose second term as Dean will end in June. Trent University would like to acknowledge the work of Professor Taylor, who has served as Dean of Arts and Science since 1998, and has demonstrated a great sense of compassion and a personal touch with students and staff throughout his terms.
