FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lead Partners include Trent University and City of Peterborough Tuesday, May 16, 2006, Peterborough At the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ville de Saguenay, Quebec, Lorne Heslop, Chair of the Board of Directors, Youth Science Foundation (Canada), formally announced that Peterborough successfully won the bid to host the Canada-Wide Science Fair in 2010. The announcement on Monday afternoon followed a successful presentation on Sunday evening by the six-member bid team led by co-chairs Brian Patrick, Gina Collins, and Linda O'Leary and supported by Mark Dzurko, Marc Gagné, and Ann McIlmoyle. As a joint effort of the Peterborough Regional Science Fair and the Victoria County Science Fair Association, the presentation was a culmination of several months of planning that included a 106-page written bid proposal. The proposal was strongly supported by lead partner Trent University; the University will provide accommodations for the estimated 800 participants and delegates for nine days in May 2010. "When I first heard that our local committee was looking into the possibility of hosting the 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair, I was immediately struck by their vision and their energy to bring a national celebration of science to the Kawarthas Region," said Trent President Bonnie Patterson. "Trent University is committed to being an active participant in this adventure. What better way to demonstrate our dedication to science than to host the best and brightest young scientists in Canada." The bid was also made possible through generous support from the City of Peterborough which will provide the Evinrude Centre as the exhibition venue. "On behalf of the City, I want to congratulate Trent for its successful bid to bring the 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair to the University and to Peterborough," said Peterborough Mayor Sylvia Sutherland. "This is tremendous news, and the spin-offs will be substantial. The Science Fair will afford us an opportunity to showcase Trent and Peterborough to the brightest young scientists from across the country. Hopefully, some will return on a more permanent basis. The fair will also have substantial economic benefits to the community. The City of Peterborough is honoured to be part of this successful effort." With an estimated $2.5 million economic impact, support from all sectors of the Kawarthas Region as well as the Youth Science Foundation (Canada) is expected to cover the projected costs of $850,000 over the next four years. The Canada-Wide Science Fair is an annual event that gathers together the winners from over 100 Regional Science Fairs across Canada to compete for national honours. It is held in celebration and recognition of scientific excellence among students from grades seven to twelve. -30- For more information, please contact: |
