FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Barbecue and Free Bike Tune-Ups on May 17 to Celebrate Trent's Commitment to being a "Green Employer" Monday, May 15, 2006, Peterborough On Wednesday, May 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. free basic bike tune-ups, provided by Wildrock Outfitters, and a barbecue will be taking place outside Lady Eaton College at Trent University (Symons Campus) to promote the University's participation in the Shifting Gears Workplace Transportation Challenge. For the month of May, Trent University is competing for the coveted title of Most Travel-Wise Employer of Peterborough in the city-wide Shifting Gears challenge. Participating Trent employees are using diary cards to keep track of every round-trip to work made by taking the bus, walking, carpooling, or biking during the month of May. This month-long competition and campaign, organized by Peterborough Green-Up, aims to engage local area employees in healthy, stress-reducing, money-saving commuting activities. "Trent University has always been committed to being a "green" employer," says Melanie Sedge, Trent's Shifting Gears Coordinator. "Students, faculty, and staff are always encouraged to make environmentally-friendly transportation choices – especially in the summer when it couldn't be easier to ride your bike directly to the University on the Rotary Trail." In addition to the University's location on the Rotary Trail, students, staff and faculty are encouraged to ride their bikes to work through the offer of a free pass to use the showers and towel service at the Athletics Centre throughout the summer. Trent's commitment to providing a green alternative to driving to work was also solidified by the recent announcement of the purchase of five new bike racks that will each hold 18 bikes, at the total cost of $3,500. These bike racks will be placed around the campus and there are plans to purchase an additional five more. The event on Wednesday, May 17, which will take place rain or shine, will feature a barbecue, available at nominal cost, to be held on the podium level outside the main doors at Lady Eaton College. The free basic bike tune-ups provided by Wildrock Outfitters will take place on the lawn outside Lady Eaton College. Peterborough Green-Up will also be on hand at the event to promote the Shifting Gears Challenge.
