Local Gifted Students Stretch Their Minds in 2006 Enrichment Program at Trent University |
||
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2006 Program Concludes this Week Monday, May 15, 2006, Peterborough Peterborough and area school boards are sending 563 students to participate in the 14th annual Trent University Mini-Enrichment Program which runs from May 2 to May 18, 2006. The Mini-Enrichment Program is organized by the University's Conference Services Department to offer gifted and highly motivated students in grades seven and eight the opportunity to study topics that are not normally offered at the intermediate school level. To accommodate the strong demand by schools, a third week of programming was added this year for the first time. Intermediate students who are accepted into the three-day Enrichment Program take a different course of study each day. The program has grown from 17 course selections in 2005 to 20 in 2006. Enrichment courses are delivered by Trent faculty, staff and graduate students and feature interactive learning in a rich variety of subjects, including "Spend a Day in Ancient Rome", "DNA Profiling", "Learning Japanese", and "The Nitty Gritty on Slime". Student reaction to the Enrichment Program has been extremely favourable. "This is a fun way to express yourself, and I may take it again next year, too," says Kate Lawler of Armour Heights Public School, a student in the Greek Drama course. Students from 49 schools are participating in the program, some coming from as far away as Unionville, Colborne, and Port Hope. "The Mini-Enrichment Program is emerging as a significant feature for the Trent experience, as an important way of connecting with the elementary school community," says Susan Apostle-Clark, Vice President (Academic) and Provost. Trent University Conference Services develops and operates several educational youth camps for students throughout May and June.
