Two Trent Students to Cycle Across Canada to Support Fight Against Breast Cancer |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Alison Ellwood and Megan MacDonald to Collect Inspiring Stories as they Travel Across the Country Monday, May 1, 2006, Peterborough On Monday, May 8 Alison Ellwood and Megan MacDonald, two recent graduates of the Consecutive Education Program at Trent University, will depart from Vancouver, BC on their bikes for a cross-country tour aimed at connecting and strengthening the network of breast cancer survivors and their families in Canada. For three and a half months, the two women will travel across the country on their bikes, collecting stories, words of wisdom, and artistic expressions of those who are living, or have lived, through the experience of breast cancer. At the end of the project, the stories from survivors, relatives, friends, and communities will be compiled into a publication which will aim to inspire, encourage, and mark the lives of those that have been touched by the disease. "The goal is to weave a common thread from one coast to the other – something that can bind us all together," said Ms. Ellwood, who was inspired to start the HerStory project after her mother, Pepe, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. According to Ms. Ellwood, the connections her mother made with other women in similar circumstances were what helped her overcome fear and anxiety. By putting together this publication, it is Ms. Ellwood's hope that other women and their families who have been affected by breast cancer will gain inspiration and strength from the same type of support. Ms. Ellwood and Ms. MacDonald met at Trent last fall. They are both outdoor enthusiasts who chose to bike across Canada for this project as a way to honour all of the women who have struggled and will continue to struggle against breast cancer. Throughout the trip, updates will be made to the web site at www.herstory2006.com. A blog has also been added to allow Ms. Ellwood and Ms. MacDonald to post updates from the road. The HerStory project is made possible through the support of several local businesses, including Wild Rock Outfitters, who have supplied the bikes and much of the gear for the trip. Monies raised through the project will go towards trip expenditures and to the Canadian Cancer Foundation.
