FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Chemical Sciences Building Receives Honourable Mention in Institutional Category Friday, April 28, 2006, Peterborough Trent University is pleased to announce that the new Chemical Sciences Building has been awarded an Honourable Mention in the Institutional (greater than $10 million) category in the 2006 Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Awards. Teeple Architects Inc. and Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners accepted the award. "Trent has a distinguished record in Canada for the excellence of its architecture, starting with the original Ron Thom Bata Library and Champlain College buildings," said John Wordley, Director of Physical Resources at Trent. "This legacy continues with the recognition of our Chemical Sciences Building by the OAA. We are all justifiably proud of the beauty and setting of our Symons campus as one of the best in Canada." The Chemical Sciences Building, which was built in 2004, houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for the Chemistry Department including teaching labs, computer labs, two wings of research labs, and a large water quality lab. Academic offices and a Partnership Centre that creates links with private sector partners are also housed in the building. Innovative features of the design include living roofs that integrate the building with its scenic landscape, student study spaces overlooking the Otonabee River, state-of-the-art information technology systems, a flexible and highly rationalized system of modular laboratory spaces, and low-flow fume hoods that minimize energy consumption and heat recovery systems. The OAA Awards offers the Ontario architectural profession an annual opportunity to present its work to a public and professional audience; it advertises the excellence of both individual award winners and the profession as a whole. In addition, it fosters a greater appreciation of architecture and architects among all levels of society.
