As one reviewer noted, "Martel's writing is so original you might think he wants you to read as if, like a perfect snowflake, no other book has ever had this form." When the book won the 2001 Mann Booker Prize, Mr. Martel was catapulted to international literary renown. Mr. Martel's first published novel, Self (1997) was set, in part, in Peterborough and draws on his undergraduate days at Trent; it aroused some strong interest as did his collection of long stories, Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios (1993). That book's title story won the Journey Prize while Self was short listed for the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Prize. Admission to the public reading is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are limited to two per person and can be picked up at the following locations:
During his stay, Mr. Martel will be the guest of Catharine Parr Traill College and will meet old friends, professors, and the media at Traill College prior to his reading.
