FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panels featuring Linda Slavin, Kathryn Langley, Toronto MP Yasmin Ratansi, and Dr. Carole Roy, to Commemorate International Women's Week Friday, March 3, 2006, Peterborough Trent University is pleased to announce that a two day World Affairs Colloquium, entitled "Women, Power and Politics" will be held in honour of International Women's Week on March 6 and 7 in the First Nations Gathering Space at Gzowski College on the Symons campus. The first panel presentation on March 6 at 1:00 p.m. will feature Toronto-area Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi and local activist and federal NDP candidate, Linda Slavin. The topic of this moderated panel will be the involvement of women in institutional politics. On March 7 at 3:00 p.m. a panel featuring Kathryn Langley from the Peterborough Women's Network and Carole Roy, a Trent Post-Doctoral Fellow, will address women in grassroots political movements. A CBC documentary on Women and the Peace Movement in Burundi will also be shown. Inspiration for both events is the conviction that the achievement of full equality between the sexes, demonstrated through full and equal participation of women in all spheres of life, is essential to human progress and the transformation of society. This colloquium will serve to increase awareness of the importance of women's participation in politics and celebrate the successes of women both in Canada and around the world. Both events are open to the public and free to attend. Refreshments will be served. -30- For more information, please contact: | ||
