FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, January 12, 2006 Trent University, along with the Sierra Youth Coalition, will host the first ever Ontario Sustainable Campuses Conference, January 13-14, 2006. The conference, "Improving Connections in the Sustainability Movement," will feature keynote speaker Elizabeth May, executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada. The event allows for the province's colleges and universities to come together to discuss ways of making Ontario's campuses more sustainable, said Trent student Ryan Sisson, a member of the conference organizing team. Students, faculty and staff have been invited to attend the conference, to be held at Gzowski College. The conference will present unique opportunities for skill building, resource sharing and learning from the experiences of others, Mr. Sisson said. There will be a focus on developing practical strategies and tactics for dramatically increasing the sustainability of universities and colleges throughout the province. The goals of the conference include:
The Ontario gathering will complement and build upon the training, information and strategies developed at the national Sustainable Campuses Conference, held annually. The conference has received support from the President's Office through the T.E.W. Nind Endowment Fund, named in honour of former Trent President Tom Nind. As well, the Office of the Vice-President (Academic) has provided support through the Academic Innovation Fund. The Alumni Association, the Trent Central Student Association, Otonabee College Cabinet and six program departments – Philosophy, Sociology, Women's Studies, Canadian Studies, Political Studies and Environmental and Resource Studies – have all provided funding for the conference as well. The Office of Student Affairs, the City of Peterborough's Transportation Department and the Kawartha World Issues Centre have provided in-kind support.
