Dr. Roberta Bondar Reappointed to Second Term as Trent University's Chancellor |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, November 7, 2005, Peterborough Trent University is pleased to announce that a recommendation by the Senate Executive to reappoint Dr. Roberta Bondar as Chancellor of Trent University for a second three-year term was unanimously approved by Senate on November 1, 2005. Dr. Bondar has been serving as Trent's ninth Chancellor since her appointment in January, 2003. Her first term will conclude June 30, 2006. Commenting on her reappointment, Dr. Bondar noted that the University's emphasis on providing a quality education experience for undergraduate and graduate students remains an inspiration. "Trent University is truly distinguished by both the calibre of its teaching and research. I am continuously encouraged to hear of the scholarly achievements of our students and to learn how Trent graduates are making a difference throughout our world. I am pleased and honoured to accept a second term as Chancellor and to be affiliated with this great University," said Dr. Bondar. Dr. Bondar is exceptionally qualified to serve as Chancellor. She is a neurologist, scientist, photographer, author and astronaut who holds the NASA Space Medal. She is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and a laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Her scientific career began in high school in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and zoology from the University of Guelph, a Master of Science degree in experimental pathology from the University of Western Ontario and her Doctor of Philosophy in neurobiology from the University of Toronto. Dr. Bondar earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at McMaster University with a special interest in space medicine. After completing her specialty certification in neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, she studied at Tufts New England Medical Centre in Boston, sub-specializing in neurophthalmology - how we see and record the world around us. Continuing her interest in vision and the visual arts, she studied professional nature photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California. In January 1992 Dr. Bondar was launched into space aboard the NASA space shuttle Discovery and became the first Canadian woman and the world's first neurologist to fly in space where she conducted life and material science experiments. - 30 - For more information, please contact:
