FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Generous Benefactor Funds New Garden to be Located on the East Bank Thursday, November 3, 2005 (Peterborough) The Trent and Peterborough communities will enjoy a new garden on campus thanks to a benefactor's generous donation. Construction began this week on the Margery J. Warren Garden located on Trent's East Bank between the new Chemical Sciences Building, Enweying Building and the Otonabee River. The design incorporates modernist lines to reflect the dynamic of the buildings. The focal point is the open view of the Otonabee River looking towards the Bata Library. The overall concept is a series of garden courts, in a variety of sizes surrounded by plantings with seasonal interest. Grasses and perennials were selected specifically for their winter interest. Flowering tree groves frame the gardens and provide shade. Linear lines of benches for seating become sculptural interest. The Executors of the Margery Warren Estate, John Hodgson and Scotiatrust have provided a gift to develop the garden and an endowment fund for garden maintenance. Margery Warren was an Early Childhood Education Teacher and a homemaker who loved gardening. “We are pleased to provide a garden that will be enjoyed by students and the Peterborough Community,” said John Hodgson, Executor of the estate. Designed by Vertecks Design Inc. of Toronto and constructed by Cressman Tree Maintenance & Landscaping Ltd., the garden will be enjoyed by anyone walking through the campus or accessing the Rotary Trail. - 30 - For more information, contact Susan Mackle, vice-president Advancement (705) 748-1011, ext. 7207
