Community invited to participate in Summer Explorations in Canadian Cultures Square Dance on August 24

Opportunity for visitors from around the world to connect with the community

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 – Peterborough

Visiting academics from around the world will have a chance to connect with members of the Peterborough community when the Summer Explorations in Canadian Cultures (SECC) program hosts a community night Square Dance at Market Hall on Wednesday, August 24 at 7 p.m.

Interested community members are invited to Market Hall, 336 George St. N., to join SECC participants, who are visiting from the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, India and the United Arab Emirates.

Caller Mike Parnell and the Otonabee Olde Tyme Fiddlers will provide entertainment. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to the SECC Sponsor a Student Program. There will be a cash bar at the event.

SECC is an annual summer program hosted by Julian Blackburn College in partnership with the Canadian Studies Program and the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Native Studies at Trent. The program brings international academics to Peterborough to learn about Canadian cultures.

SECC participants attend a variety of academic lectures presented by Trent professors and community experts. They also participate in experiential learning by visiting local sites such as the Peterborough Lift Lock, the Canadian Canoe Museum, Curve Lake, Petroglyphs Provincial Park and other sites within the Kawarthas and throughout Ontario.

Each year the SECC program hosts a community night. This allows the participants to connect with the Peterborough community and allows the community to benefit from this program.

Community members wishing to participate can contact Jennifer Allen at jenniferallen@trentu.ca or at 705-748-1011, ext. 5160.

Come on out and welcome the SECC 2005 participants to Peterborough!
