||
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Second local high school student to receive Trent's most prestigious scholarship and $20,500 Thursday, June 16, 2005, Peterborough Trent University has awarded its most prestigious scholarship to a local high school student for the second time this year. St. Peter's Secondary School student Stephen McCarthy is the recipient of Trent's second Champlain Scholarship, valued at $20,500 over four years. Mr. McCarthy has accepted the scholarship and hence, Trent's offer of admission. Last month, PCVS student Matt Whitfield was awarded the first of the two scholarships. Champlain Scholarships are awarded to students entering their first year of study at Trent, and recognize exceptionally high academic achievement and promise. Two scholarships are awarded yearly. This year, the value of the scholarship has been raised from $17,500 to $20,500 to recognize the increasingly exceptional calibre of student applicants. Mr. McCarthy comes to Trent with a high-nineties average, looking to pursue a career in medical science – biochemistry or molecular biology. He is an avid volunteer in his school community and beyond. In addition to his schoolwork and a part-time job, Mr. McCarthy has tutored his fellow students and volunteered as a porter at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) and in various capacities in the St. Alphonsus Church community. An avid reader of science books, especially those relating to biology and cosmology, Mr. McCarthy is also a recreational artist, golfer and juggler. In his volunteer role at PRHC, Mr. McCarthy says he has the occasional opportunity to juggle for patients. "The wonderful secondary aspect about serving my local community is how it also helps me to develop my leadership skills, and to evolve into a more sympathetic person. I can't help but feel obliged to give back when so much of Peterborough's community has given me the chance to feel welcomed," wrote Mr. McCarthy in his scholarship application. "We are thrilled that Mr. McCarthy will be joining us at Trent in September – he is an exceptional student and citizen," said Trent Registrar Susan Salusbury. "On a larger scale, we are also fortunate that Peterborough will remain home to such a community-minded individual. He will undoubtedly enhance life on our campus as he continues to contribute in the broader community." "Stephen has always been dedicated to his academics and helping those students that welcome his assistance," says Kathy Burns, St. Peter's Secondary School guidance counsellor. "He is a caring, sharing individual and will be an asset to the Trent University community." The Champlain Scholarship was also awarded last year to a local high school student, St. Peter's Secondary School graduate Danica Hogan. As well, Edward Stokan from Kenner Collegiate and Katharine Rogers from Lakefield College School received Special Admission Scholarships valued at $11,000 each over four years. -30- For further information, please contact:
