Indigenous Performance Initiatives and the Department of Native Studies host Welcome Gathering and Round Table with Touring Choreographers: April 29 |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Free event to take place before two Peterborough performances, April 30 and May 1, on the Indigenous Dancelands cross-Canada tour Friday, April 29, 2005, Peterborough Indigenous Performance Initiatives in association with the Department of Native Studies at Trent University in conjunction with Peterborough New Dance will be hosting a welcome gathering and round table on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Peoples House of Learning performance space in Peter Gzowski College, Enweying Building, on the east bank of the Symons Campus. This event precedes Indigenous Dancelands performances in Peterborough on April 30 and May 1, features the four choreographers and will be moderated by Jerry Longboat. A reception will follow. All are welcome to attend and admission is free of charge. Indigenous Dancelands is a touring initiative of the CanDance Network of Dance Presenters, whereby three presenters – Peterborough New Dance, New Dance Horizons of Regina and Tangente of Montreal – have chosen choreographers from their region for presentation of one program that will tour to all three cities, plus one additional city - Lethbridge. Peterborough New Dance selected Santee Smith from Six Nations, Tangente chose Gaetan Gingras of Montreal, and New Dance Horizons selected two pieces: a collaboration between Byron Chief-Moon and Karen Jamieson of Vancouver, and a new media work by Anthony Deiter of Regina. This unique Aboriginal dance program is touring across Canada until May 8. An essay looking at contemporary Aboriginal dance has been specially written for the tour program by Prof. Marrie Mumford, former head of Aboriginal Arts at the Banff Centre, and currently Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Arts and Literature at Trent. A second essay, written by Mr. Longboat, Aboriginal Dance Consultant at the Canada Council for the Arts, has also been included. In each city, like in Peterborough, local Aboriginal organizations are collaborating with presenters to bring Aboriginal audiences in contact with the touring artists. In addition to Trent University’s Native Studies Department, these include the Sakewewak Artists Collective in Regina, the Dept. of Native American Studies at the University of Lethbridge and Terre en Vue in Montreal. Indigenous Dancelands is a Touring Exchange Project of the CanDance Network of Dance Presenters, supported by The Canada Council for the Arts and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
