| Trent University Receives $177,799 in CFI Funding to Support Two New Researchers | ||
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 14, 2005, Peterborough Trent University welcomes the Canada Foundation for Innovation's (CFI) announcement to invest $177,799 in research being conducted by Professors Shaun Watmough and Gary Burness. "These awards empower Canadian institutions to recruit and retain leading researchers from around the world, and help to reverse the brain drain by keeping our nation's leading research minds in Canada," said Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI. Prof. James Parker, Associate Vice President of Research at Trent, praised the CFI's New Opportunities program as an example of how research dollars directed at younger faculty are adding to Trent's strong research performance. "Professor Watmough's project will add to Trent's growing reputation in biogeochemical research related to the study of the impacts of climate change, pollutants, and industry on the world's forests and surface waters. Professor Burness' project will allow Trent to establish additional resources in the new DNA teaching and research facility to conduct cutting-edge research in ecological and evolutionary physiology." The CFI was joined by the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, in Victoria to announce $23.8 million. The CFI Board of Directors approved this investment through two funds: $18.3 million under the New Opportunities Fund; and $5.5 million under the Infrastructure Operating Fund which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects. "The CFI's ongoing commitment to funding research infrastructure has made Canada a destination of choice when it comes to research," said Minister Emerson. "The announcement of additional research funding for academic researchers at Trent University is significant because it will assist them to carry on with their important work to help grow and enhance Canada's reputation as a leading-edge country in the global, knowledge-based economy," said Peter Adams, MP, Peterborough. "With this increase in support to our research community, we are now better able to maintain and recruit the very best of talent as we strive to build on our proud record of achievement and academic excellence." The CFI's New Opportunities Fund enables eligible universities to provide research infrastructure for newly recruited faculty members, in their first full-time academic appointment in Canadian degree-granting institutions, so that these researchers can undertake leading-edge research. The fund also enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research identified as priorities in their strategic research plans. The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure.
