Mind over Matter: Intellectual Property in the Modern World Tuesday, March 1, 2005, PeterboroughTrent University is pleased to announce its 2005 Alumni Lecture, Mind over Matter: Intellectual Property in the Modern World with Greg Piasetzki '72, on Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m. in room 115 in Peter Gzowski College at Symons Campus. All are welcome. There is no charge for admission. This lecture will provide attendees with a basic understanding of intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks and copyrights) and their role in the modern world. The lecture will explain what intellectual property rights are, how they are created (what constitutes an act of invention or creation), who owns the rights (the inventor/author or employer) and why, for many businesses, they represent an important, and sometimes an essential, class of business assets. Mr. Piasetzki is a partner with Piasetzki & Nenniger in Toronto, and practices exclusively in the area of intellectual property. He has an honours degree in chemistry from Trent University with post-graduate courses in pharmacology and chemistry and a law degree from Queen's University. He was called to the bar in 1982. He is a Fellow of the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada, the Advocates Society, the Canadian Bar Association, the International Trademark Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He is the author of numerous papers on intellectual property matters, has been an invited speaker at intellectual property programs in China, Ukraine and Brazil and has spoken to many groups in North America including the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Alumni Lecture was established in 1989 as part of the University's 25th Anniversary celebrations.
