Trent University’s 40th Anniversary
From art and music, to cake and a merry-go-round, Trent Week invites the entire community to celebrate 40 great years

Monday, September 20, 2004, Peterborough

The fanfare of flags that now welcomes visitors to Trent University's campus in its 40th anniversary year, are just a precursor to the celebrations in store for Trent Week, October 11 – 16.

The week was named by Mayor Sylvia Sutherland, also a Trent alumna, in honour of Trent University's 40th anniversary. Trent's opening ceremonies took place on October 17, 1964.

40th Anniversary Committee Chair, Professor Gordon Johnston invites everyone to participate in the activities planned. Trent themed its anniversary "The Spirit of Trent" as a tribute to the exceptional people that continue to make Trent an outstanding institution.

OCTOBER 16
A huge 40th birthday party, free and open to the public, will be held at Symons Campus on October 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., complete with tours of the campus and the new Peter Gzowski College, varsity games, an art show, live music, writers reading their work, and even a free merry-go-round. Everyone will receive a complimentary hamburger, hotdog or veggie dog and a drink. There will also be a beer tent. At 4 p.m., a big birthday cake will be cut in honour of the University's 40th birthday.

Throughout the week leading up to the birthday celebration, other Trent Week activities will take place, featuring various Trent groups. All are open to the public.

OCTOBER 11 – 16
"The Spirit of Trent:" Anniversary Art Show

The 40th anniversary Art Show will feature works housed in the University Art Collection as well as more recent pieces done over the summer by a select group of artists who have a connection with the University. The theme is the "Spirit of Trent" and the art will reflect a variety of responses to Trent University's environment, people, identity, and history.

OCTOBER 11
Trent International Student Association Potluck
The annual Trent International Student Association Potluck brings together people and food from all over the world. A tradition that started with a few Trent International Program (TIP) students sharing their national cuisines, the International Potluck has grown to be one of the largest international gatherings of the academic year. Last year, more than 250 people sat down to dinner in the great hall, sharing food that students, faculty, staff and friends of TIP had prepared. From borscht to baklava, from goulash to djolof, and including a performance by the TISA choir sharing songs from around the world, the evening is always a warm celebration of Trent's rich international community. International student leaders are proud to have the Potluck included in Trent's 40th Anniversary celebration! For information and tickets, please contact the TIP Office, 748-1314 or e-mail tip@trentu.ca.

OCTOBER 12
Ruby Tuesday with performances by Trent students
The Great Hall, Champlain College,  8 – 11 p.m.

Trent University students present a Tribute to Trent with the production of "Ruby Tuesday." An exciting evening for all ages, with live music of all kinds from all eras and licensed beverages to go along with the entertainment. "Ruby Tuesday" is a revival of a similar event held back in the early days of Trent, where students would gather to hear the latest campus groups and performers. Born out of the 60's, we commemorate 40 years of music at Trent and will welcome acts of all musical styles and influences. The Pylons, a 10-piece rock 'n ska band, will be the headline act. "Ruby Tuesday" will be a great time to hang out, have fun and listen to music. Admission is free and it is a wet/dry event with a wristband policy in effect. Come join us, as we celebrate Trent's 40th Anniversary.

OCTOBER 13
Trent in Oshawa celebration hosted by the part-time student's association and alumni, plus a 60's diner hosted by Trent staff in Peterborough

The 60's diner will be held at the Great Hall from 11a.m. - 2 p.m. Staff, students and faculty will dress in the style of the 60's. There will be a best dress contest and a display of 60's classic cars on the Lady Eaton field across from the Library. Aramark will be offering a 60's menu in the food court, and also a soda bar in the Great Hall. Music and displays will be a part of the day.

OCTOBER 13 – 16
Spiderwoman Theatre's production of Persistence of Memory
Performance Space, Enweying Building

Spiderwoman Theatre is an indigenous theatre group that has performed in New York, Berlin, Auckland and Beijing. They are now "coming home," connecting stories of the past to the future. Persistence of Memory evolved at the Aboriginal Arts Program at the Banff Arts Centre. Members of Spiderwoman Theatre are in residence at the University and their presence at Trent is part of an increasing number of indigenous performance initiatives at the Performance Space in the First Peoples House of Learning. For tickets and more information, please contact Marrie Mumford at 748-1011 ext. 7310.

OCTOBER 14
Academic Survivor, Champlain Great Hall, Champlain College at 7:30 p.m.

A night for faculty to poke fun at themselves and for students, alumni and our colleagues to join in the fun. Teams of two or three faculty representing each of the academic disciplines (Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences) will vie with each other to convince the audience and a panel of judges that their discipline is the best. In order to demonstrate their supremacy, teams will perform a musical routine, a skit, or an oration and the audience applause-metre will help the judges make their decisions. You are invited to join in the fun!  There will be a cash bar.

OCTOBER 15
Black Tie and Birkenstock (a fun formal!), at the PSB Wilson Athletic Building, 6:30 p.m.

Hosted by Trent alumni, this fun event invites Trent alumni, students, faculty, staff and the public to dress up and have fun the Trent way! The cocktails, dinner and dancing has already attracted Trent Chancellor Dr. Roberta Bondar, President Bonnie Patterson and an array of others. Check out the guest list at http://www.trentu.ca/alumni/chapters/events/BlackTieBirkenstock.html or call 748-1011 ext. 1656 for tickets and further info.
