University Responds to Reference to 'Status quo' Wage Increase

August 10, 2004

A published report in today's Peterborough Examiner about the status of the University's negotiations with OPSEU Local 365 states, "The division lies in the university's offer of a 'status quo' wage increase... "

This statement is misleading.

The University tabled an offer weeks before the conciliation meeting with the Union executive that included a wage increase of 3 per cent in each year of a proposed three- year contract. This increase would cost the University approximately $1,150,000. Such an increase is not a 'status quo' wage increase.

The University also conveyed to the Examiner that it remains committed to the bargaining process and is hopeful that the mediation session scheduled for August 10-11 will result in a negotiated settlement.

This statement was excluded from the Examiner's published report.
