TRENT RESUMES NORMAL OPERATIONS EFFECTIVE SATURDAY, JULY 17

University remains closed today July 16 – Academic programs, orientations for first year students and parents resume this coming Friday, July 16

July 16, 2004, Peterborough

Following two days of initial clean up operations, Trent University will resume regular business hours effective Saturday, July 17. All academic programs will resume their normal schedules effective that day forward.

The Bata Library will open for its regular hours from 1-4 pm Saturday, July 17.  The library is closed on Sunday as per the normal schedule.

The Athletics Complex resumes its schedule of normal hours of operations with the centre reopening on Monday, July 19, from 8 am to 9:30 pm; as per its normal schedule, the complex is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Orientations for first year students and their parents resume on Monday, July 17 as previously scheduled.

Clean up at numerous areas throughout the University continues with special focus on the basement wing of the Otonabee College, one of the hardest hit areas. Immediate tasks include removing damaged carpets, running dehumidifiers and the cleaning of office spaces.

Bonnie Patterson, President and Vice Chancellor, praised Trent's employees who contributed so much to the response to the state of emergency. "Trent's employees provided a swift response to the flooding. I want to thank all Trent staff and faculty, some of whom who had flooding in their own homes, and some of whom were on vacation; they persevered and contributed greatly to the University's response," said President Patterson.

She added that students registered in the Athletics Department's summer camp program who were sleeping in the Athletics Complex on Thursday evening displayed great team work and contributed to the response to the flooding. "The overnight campers who were sleeping in the gymnasium were some of the first individuals to notice water seeping through the gymnasium's ceiling early in the morning. Their team efforts to unplug drains, mop up floors and dam doorways ensured that serious damage did not occur to the gymnasium's wooden floors."

The President also praised City, Township and County municipal officials and their emergency response teams for the support they provided. "The community's response confirmed that residents in the Peterborough region support each other in times of crisis. We appreciated how all of the local officials reacted to a very, very difficult situation."
