Allice Legat to Visit Trent for Two Upcoming Talks

Ms. Legat's talks: "Sometimes the Caribou Do Not Come" on Feb. 3 and "Experiencing Stories: Knowledge and Information" on Feb. 5

Friday, January, 30, 2004, Peterborough

Trent University is pleased to welcome Allice Legat, a Ph.D. candidate at Aberdeen University for two upcoming talks.

  • February 3 - "Sometimes the Caribou Do Not Come," Wilson Room, Kerr House, Catharine Parr Traill College, 4 p.m.
  • February 5 - "Experiencing Stories: Knowledge and Information," Pine Tree Talk, Native Studies Lounge, 10 a.m.

Ms. Legat has worked for the Dogrib Dene, whose traditional territory lies between Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes in the Northwest Territories. She has also held senior position in the Ministry of Culture for the NWT government. Over the last three decades, the Dogrib have moved from being relatively isolated to having prolonged interaction over the last ten years with scientists, bureaucrats, developers and corporate representatives. This engagement with the wider world is due to the discovery of diamonds on their traditional territories and the subsequent construction of new mines.

Ms. Legat's talks will focus on the elders' responses to the diamonds and their impact on the caribou herds central to traditional subsistence and Dogrib epistemologies and ways of knowing the world.

These talks are sponsored by the Frost Centre for Canadian and Native Studies, Canadian Studies, Native Studies and Anthropology.
