For Immediate Release CBC Radio's Peter Gzowski Internship Program Open to Trent University Students for the Second Year Trent one of only four Canadian universities selected to participate Friday, December 19, 2003, Peterborough If the experience of last year's CBC Radio Peter Gzowski intern is any indication, a selected Trent University student is in for the experience of a lifetime. Fourth-year Trent students have the opportunity once again this year, to apply for the second annual CBC Radio Peter Gzowski internship program. Bethany Or, a Trent graduate who now lives in Ottawa, was selected to be one of the first four Peter Gzowski interns and worked at the CBC in Toronto from May to August 2003. CBC Radio established the internships to honour the memory of the late Peter Gzowski and to offer training and broadcast opportunities to eligible final-year students in four participating universities across the country. An acclaimed broadcaster, author and journalist Peter Gzowski became the eighth Chancellor of Trent in July 1999. The CBC radio host of Morningside (1982 to 1997) received an honorary degree from Trent in 1987 for outstanding public service and broadcasting. In 1992, he donated his papers to the Trent Archives because of his affinity for what Trent has come to stand for. President Bonnie Patterson commended the CBC for its initiative that will once again provide new career opportunities for senior Trent students. "It is a fitting tribute to Peter that the CBC chose to structure the internship program in a way that will give students opportunities to live and work in different communities across Canada. Peter would be very proud that a program named in his honour will allow Trent University students to develop their programming skills and explore the Canada he loved so much." According to Ms. Or, who came to Trent to study Botany and ended up with her honours degree in Political and Comparative Development Studies, those who know they can be genuinely interested in scores of subjects, should apply for the internship program - "no question." Without walls, departments or disciplines, Ms. Or says she had the opportunity to think about many things at the CBC - art, science and sports. She likened her pursuit of ideas at the CBC to her time at Trent. "You're always looking for ideas... The whole world becomes your palette," she says, adding she hopes to eventually work as a professor and a broadcaster. After six days of intense training at the CBC in Toronto, the three other interns from Simon Fraser University, McGill University and Memorial University in Newfoundland fanned out across the country to Vancouver, Montreal and St. John's, while in Toronto, Ms. Or settled in. She worked on five radio shows including Cross Country Checkup, The Current, two music shows and in the newsroom. Regardless of where she was working, Ms. Or says everyday at the CBC was its own essay or project. The highlights of her internship at CBC, other than getting to say things like, "Bethany Or, CBC news," include stepping into Michael Enright's office and working with Anna Maria Tremonti, not to mention interviewing a woman in Sierra Leone for a story about Liberia. As they spoke, Ms. Or could hear someone washing dishes in the background and the wind blowing through the trees. "The personal connections are amazing - meeting people all the time that I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to meet.
