Posted: Thursday, November 6, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRENT UNIVERSITY MOURNS THE PASSING OF MR. DAVID A. SHEPERD Members of the Trent University community are mourning the death of Mr. David A. Sheperd who passed away in Florida on Tuesday, November 4, 2003. David Sheperd came to Peterborough in 1985 as founding President of A-L Stainless, Inc. He served the community in many areas including Chair of the local United Way board and involvement at the provincial United Way level, Skills Development Programs in Peterborough and throughout Ontario, the Industrial Development Committee, and the Centre for Manufacturing Development. In September, 1990, Mr. Sheperd donated $100,000 to Trent University to establish an endowed lectureship in environmental studies named the David Sheperd Family Lecture Series. The purpose of the lecture series is to bring to Trent University and the Peterborough community individuals who have obtained a world-wide reputation in the field of environmental affairs The words of Jim Lovell, Commander of Apollo 13, served as an inspirational theme that guided Mr. Sheperd in the creation of the lecture series. Lovell's comment that, "Earth is a precious and fragile place; handle with living care," complemented Trent's growing reputation for offering world class environmental programs. Since 1992, the Sheperd lecture series has brought world environmental leaders to the university. Some of the lectures have included: "The Egosystem and the Ecosystem," by Jack Vallentyne, "Ecological Footprints and the Sustainability Gap," by William Rees, "Crossing the Border: Conservation Movements In Canada and the U.S.," by Dr. Donald Worster, and "What Nature Knows: Literature and History in Environmental Studies" by William Howarth. In February, 2002 the David Sheperd family co-sponsored the plenary sessions, "Simply Water? Who Owns It. Can You Trust It. Is There Enough." The most recent lecture in March, 2003 was given by David Runnalls and focused on "Canada's Ratification of Kyoto: How not to make public policy." Mr. Sheperd is survived by his wife Joanne and daughters Sandy, Barb and Karen. A memorial service will be held in Florida. Donations may be made to the Peterborough and District United Way or Hospice Peterborough. In honour of Mr. Sheperd the flag atop the Bata Library is at half mast. - 30 - For more information contact: Don Cumming, Senior Director, Public Affairs, (705) 748-1011, ext. 1224 |
