FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First Aid Training Courses Offered at Trent University

Trent University's Department of Athletics and Recreation is offering first aid training this November in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross Society. First aid training is an important skill, whether for general interest or as a job requirement.

The following courses are available:

Standard First Aid Course

This 16-hour course will teach the skills to recognize and treat a variety of life-threatening injuries, including airway obstruction, heart attack, bone and spinal injuries, heat and cold emergencies, and poisoning. CPR skills for adults, children and infants are included in this course. The standard first aid course will be offered November 15 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days.

Emergency First Aid Course

Looking for a quick introduction to first aid? This eight-hour course provides the basics of emergency care and life support. Candidates will focus on the principles of primary assessment, airway obstruction, rescue breathing, and CPR, plus care of bleeding and wounds, for adults, children and infants. The emergency first aid course will be offered on November 15 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Standard First Aid Recertification

This course is aimed at individuals with prior first aid training, and will update candidates on changes in first aid principles, give them a chance to practice their skills again, and increase their confidence in dealing with emergencies. CPR for adults, children, and infants is included in this course (level "C" CPR recertification). The standard first aid recertification will be held on November 14 and 21 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. both days.

First Aid Instructor Course

This course prepares experienced first aiders to teach the First Aid and CPR programs of the Canadian Red Cross Society. Topics include Red Cross emergency services, course administration and planning, teaching injury prevention, skill development, and evaluation techniques. A co-teaching experience is required within six months of the course to complete the certification process. Pre-requisites include: current Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR certifications and candidates must be 18 years of age by course start. The first aid instructor course will be held on November 14, 15 and 16.
