Trent Graduate Student wins $70,000 Canada Graduate Scholarship

July 15, 2003

Christopher Warren, a doctoral student with Trent University’s Watershed Ecosystems Graduate Program under the supervision of Professor Don Mackay, has been awarded a $70,000 doctoral level Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS).

Mr. Warren, a top-ranked Post Graduate Scholarship recipient, was selected for this award based on the recommendation of the NSERC Scholarship and Fellowship Selection Committee. The award will commence immediately and is tenable over the next two years.

The new Canada Graduate Scholarships are the flagship scholarships of NSERC’s (Natural Sciences and Engineering Council) postgraduate awards program. The doctoral level awards are valued at $35,000 per year for up to three years.

Mr. Warren is joined by two other award recipients from Trent’s Biology and Physics undergraduate programs. Jennifer Rossman and Shawn Penson have been selected to receive a one-year Master’s level CGS valued at $17,500. Ms. Rossman and Mr. Penson are moving on to M.Sc.studies at other Canadian universities.

The prestigious scholarships (master’s and doctoral level), announced by the Government of Canada, are awarded by the three federal granting agencies through national competitions. When fully phased in by 2006-07, the program will provide an additional $105 million to allow a greater number of excellent students to pursue graduate studies in Canada.
NSERC supports more than 9,000 students in their advanced studies and promotes discovery by funding more than 8,700 researchers every year and encouraging Canadian companies to invest in university research.
