TRENT UNIVERSITY HONOURS TOP ATHLETES

Trent University students Michael Langford and Kristin Kawamoto received double honours this evening at the 34th annual Athletic Awards Ceremony, held at the University’s Athletic Complex.

Mr. Langford and Ms. Kawamoto were recognized not only as provincial all-star athletes by Ontario University Athletics and the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, but also were the recipients of the Arthur Cup, the University’s most prestigious award for graduates demonstrating outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in athletic programs.

Ms. Kawamoto, a sociology and Native studies student in the Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education Program, has been honoured numerous times for her participation in Trent’s athletic programs. As a member of the varsity volleyball team during her four years at Trent, she has been recognized twice as an Academic All-Canadian, was named an OCAA All-Star, and served as team captain for the past two years. Ms. Kawamoto, who hails from Hamilton, is held in high regard by her teammates for her leadership and high standards. She is also one of the most active students in intramural programs, as both a captain and participant, and was recognized this evening as the top female participant at the University.

Mr. Langford, who hails from Kanata, and who will graduate this spring with a degree in anthropology, has also been named an Academic All-Canadian and OUA All-Star for his involvement in Trent’s varsity program. During his four years at Trent, he has been a leader on the men’s rugby team, serving as both vice-president and president of the rugby club, and he has received the P.S.B. Wilson Award for outstanding contributions to the team. He is described by teammates and coaches as a highly skilled player and an outstanding role model for new players, both on and off the field. His example to others and his active involvement epitomizes the spirit of participation and fair play.

"Kristin and Michael have made outstanding contributions, not only to the athletic programs, but to Trent University. They are talented leaders and embody all the characteristics which the Arthur Cup represents," said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics. President Bonnie Patterson joined Mr. Byrick in presenting the Arthur Cup, and other awards, during the evening’s ceremony.
