TRENT ATHLETES EXCEL IN WINTER VARSITY COMPETITION

Several Trent University athletic teams were in action over the weekend and brought home numerous top rankings.

Trent swim team members were at the University of Waterloo. In the men’s events Alex Babaris shattered the University of Waterloo pool records with a first-place finish in the 200 m. fly; and, combined with Che Mineque, Scott Adams, and Jeff Kerswill, captured first in the 400 m. medley relay. Mr. Mineque followed with a first in the 50 m. backstroke and Mr. Babaris won the 50 m. butterfly. Scott Adams won the 200 m. breaststroke, Kate Armitage won the 50 m. butterfly, and second and third place finishes went to Alex Delory, Sabrina Romani, Jen Bosnell and Leigh Derrough. Coached by Sean Dwyer, the Trent team continues to impress the University community as it powers its way through this season.

Trent’s new Nordic Ski Team had impressive results in Ottawa on the weekend. Steve Hart finished second in both classic and skating competitions. Pete Braul finished fourth and sixth, and Steve Dunbar 28th and 25th. Adrienne Mason finished 25th and 13th, while Lara Mountain finished 49th. The skiers are now gearing up for another competition in two weeks, followed by the Ontario University Athletics Championships in February.

Trent University has been a fencing power for a number of years and, despite 2002-03 being a rebuilding year, coach Dave French’s fencers came home with a silver medal after competing at the Carleton Invitational Fencing Tournament this weekend. The women’s sabre team took top honours in their division and the large contingent of new Trent fencers did very well, which bodes well for future years. Women’s sabre team members are Sheena Mackay, Heather Edgar, Julie Wolters and Dana Fedderson. Trent will be hosting the East West Sectional Tournament on January 18 and 19 in the Athletic Complex. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Trent University hosted the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association All-Star Volleyball game and skills competition on January 11 in partnership with Sir Sandford Fleming College. The Trent women’s volleyball team, coached by Pete Carter, participates in this competitive league, and Trent player Kirsten Kawamoto was selected most valuable player in her match.
