Peace Event Marks September 11

Peace tree planted at Trent University

At 9:00am on September 11, 2002, a group of staff, faculty and students from the Trent University community gathered together to mark the tragic events that occurred in New York City one year ago.

President Bonnie Patterson addressed the gathering, as did Ivana Elbl, head of Otonabee College and professor in the Department of History, and Vern Douglas of the Trent Native Studies Department.

Vern reflected on the events of September 11 and spoke about the symbolic peace tree which has been planted in front of Wenjack Theatre at the turning circle, at the southeast corner of Parking Lot R at Otonabee College. Each participant at the ceremony was able to place a handful of dirt beneath the tree.
