Ceremony
Introduces Students to First Nation Traditions
On
September 12, 2002, the Department of Native Studies at Trent University
held a welcome ceremony for all Native Studies students. This ceremony
also marked the move of the department's tee pee, which was previously
located on the lawn between Otonabee College and the river, on the construction
site for the new science facility and the First People's House of Learning.
The tee pee is now located behind Otonabee College, overlooking fields
and natural habitat. It will be used in various ceremonies throughout
the year, and will also serve in a teaching capacity to help students
better understand First Nations' cultures.
Elders Doug Williams and Edna Manitowabi spoke to the large gathering
of students, who formed a circle for the welcome ceremony and were given
the opportunity to make an offering of tobacco.
