Connecting Students with Career Opportunities
In
the past year, student access to career information at Trent University
has expanded by leaps and bounds. In celebration of this achievement an
entire slate of events is taking place this week on campus.
One major event was a University-wide career fair held on Wednesday, October 16, in the Great Hall. Organized by the Trent Business Students’ Association, the fair was a huge success. Over 25 businesses and organizations were represented. Students had the opportunity to ask specific career questions and network with representatives from varied institutions, from banks to the Canadian Armed Forces.
Also on Wednesday, the Career Centre - located in room 204 of Champlain College – held its grand opening. This resource centre boasts a huge volume of information geared to students seeking career advice.
Career Centre Co-ordinator and Counsellor Kristi Kerford is available to meet with students and offer information about prospective jobs. This type of direction can have a substantial impact on course selection throughout a student’s time here at Trent, and the aim is to empower students and prepare them for the workplace upon graduation.
Gwynne
Roseborough, associate director of Student Affairs, spoke at the opening
and expressed her pleasure at Trent’s progressive move in offering
expanded career-related services to students. She discussed the work done
since 1999 to ensure the development of the Career Centre and related
employment services.
In addition to career counselling and the offering of resources, Trent also boasts an alumni mentoring program specifically related to career planning. A WebCT career planning and work search program has also been designed by Career Centre assistant Shannon Maguire, and career counselling has been expanded to include Trent students studying in Durham. Career fairs have continued to be successful, and a summer job fair is being planned for February 5, 2003.
Over the past few years many business leaders have spoken widely about the relevance and importance of a liberal arts and science education. Critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and many other attributes necessary in today’s world of work are directly linked to the B.A. and B.Sc. experience, and it is noteworthy that Trent is helping students connect their studies with tangible career options in so many ways.
