Bhutanese
leader speaks to Trent class
First-year
Trent students enrolled in Administration 100 were treated to a guest
lecture on Monday, October 7, by the Bhutanese Minister of Finance Yeshey
Zimba.
Mr. Zimba’s daughter, Sonam Chuki Zimba, is a second-year student
at Trent University and Mr. Zimba delivered the guest lecture while visiting
her at the University.
"It was a very interesting talk. He said that, as a country, there
are four goals to work towards – economic development, environmental
sustainability, national culture and good governance. He feels that GNP
is only a means to that end. I was very excited to have him in our class,"
says Administration 100 Professor Ray Dart.
There are six Bhutanese students attending Trent, including Mr. Zimba’s
daughter, his niece Nawang Eden, and Nyingtob Norbu, Pema Tenzin, Tamara
Wangchuk and Sonam Rabgye. Bhutan is situated in the Himalayan mountains
between the countries of Tibet and Bangladesh, just east of Nepal.
Mr. Zimba has served in the Bhutanese Ministry of Finance since 1990.
He has also served as part of the Heads of Government – Council
of Ministry and was, at one point, the Head of Government in Bhutan, a
position similar to the office of the Canadian Prime Minister.
On October 8, during a visit with Trent University President Bonnie Patterson,
Mr. Zimba commented on the beauty of the Trent campus. He also mentioned
that his daughter is enjoying her studies at the University.
