Continuing Ed Courses Offer Lessons on Writing

This spring and summer there are two continuing education courses being offered at Trent University that can help you to improve your writing skills. Whether it's writing your memoir or working on a novel, experienced instructors will guide you towards becoming a better writer and help you get on your way to finishing your project. Choose the course that's right for you!

Novel Writing

Jonathan BennettWhether you have many interconnected ideas but don't know how to begin, or you are simply ready to move on from shorter fiction writing to a longer project, this course will be your supporting guide. Topics to be covered in this course include: how to come up with novel-length ideas, getting started, building an outline, and ways to discipline yourself and stay with it once you are underway. Students will also learn about the basic techniques of writing a novel: starting off with a bang, building strong characters, and creating a plot that feels urgent and engaging.

This 20-hour course is being led by Jonathan Bennett, author of three books, including After Battersea Park. Mr. Bennett has also published a collection of poetry entitled Here is my street, this tree I planted, and a collection of short stories, Verandah People, which was a runner-up for the Danuta Gleed Literary Award. Mr. Bennett's writing has also appeared in many periodicals and journals including: the Globe and Mail, Quill and Quire, Antipodes: A North American Journal of Australian Literature, and Descant. An experienced writing instructor, Jonathan is originally from Sydney, Australia.

The course will be held on Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. starting May 29 and running through to July 19. There will be no class on June 19. The course fee is $349 (GST exempt); for students, seniors, and alumni, the fee is $314 (GST exempt).

Writing Your Story: Creative Non-Fiction

Do you read memoirs and wish you could be working on yours? Do you have a story that has to be told? Creative Non-Fiction is a new name for an old art of telling true stories using the techniques of fiction: dialogue, imagery, plot, theme, character, setting, and point of view. Come and learn how to get started telling your story from your unique point of view. Learn how to incorporate the techniques of fiction into your non-fiction, and how to market your finished work. In this class you will also study some published essays and the essays produced during the course.

This course is taught by Mary J. Breen, who has been a writer and editor for the last twenty years. She has taught numerous Clear Writing Workshops in Canada and overseas, and she has written two books about women's health.

Being held on Wednesday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., this 16-hour course will run from June 7 to July 26. The fee is $319 (GST exempt) and $287 (GST exempt) for students, seniors, and Trent alumni.
