Peterborough Regional Science Fair Winners Announced

Trent University is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Peterborough Regional Science Fair, including those who will go on to represent the Peterborough region at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) to be held in Ville de Saguenay, Quebec from May 13 to 21.

Held April 11 at Trent University, the 36th Annual Science Fair attracted nearly 300 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The fair is a yearly celebration of youth and science.

On the day of the Science Fair, there were approximately 130 judges involved in evaluating the projects and identifying those of the highest merit. Awards were presented in the Wenjack Theatre at 4:00 p.m. by a panel of sponsors and committee members including Mark Dzurko (Chief Judge), Peter Adams (former MP of Peterborough), Sylvia Terpstra (Director the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board), Barry Askew (Ontario Power Generation Energy Awards), John Crossen (representing Mrs. Frank Hancock, Frank Hancock Memorial Award), Bhauna Patel (Just Toys Educational Awards), Jim Sutcliffe (Associate Dean (Science) Trent University Science Fair Award), and Mark Vallincourt (Hydro One Energy Ambassador Award).

“The Science Fair is the culmination of many hours of hard work by the volunteer committee members who pull together the funding, the judging, and the logistics to mount one of Canada’s most successful regional fairs. But the effort is worth every hour and more,” said Dr. Brian Patrick, Director of the Science Fair and a Professor in Trent's Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences Program. “Inspiring young minds to pursue a path of scientific exploration and discovery is an obligation to the future success, health, and progress of our nation.”

This year, winners Dana Madill and Ashley Patel from Lakefield College School and Sabheen Khan from Adam Scott CVI move on to represent the Peterborough Region at the Canada Wide Science Fair in May. They follow a tradition of excellence and look forward to meeting their fellow winners from all corners of Canada.
