Top Teaching Award will be Presented to Trent English Professor at Spring Convocation Trent University is pleased to announce that English Professor Geoffrey Eathorne, who will be retiring this year after 38 years with the University, will be presented with the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching at the convocation ceremonies to be held in June. Established in 1976, the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented annually to a faculty member who displays exemplary teaching, as well as concern for students. The award is Trent University's most prestigious teaching honour. Professor Eathorne came to Trent in 1969 after completing a B.A. in New Zealand and an M.A. at the University of Canterbury. He has been nominated for the Symons Award several times over the years with students regularly praising his teaching style and kind character. This year's nominators commented on Professor Eathorne's insight, his passion, and his supportive, friendly demeanour. One student wrote, "He is supportive, appreciative, and genuinely excited about both his work and what students have to contribute. I think all of his students would agree that he is one of the most influential and personable faculty members [at Trent]." Professor David Poole, the Associate Dean of Arts and Science (Teaching and Learning), agrees, stating, "Professor Eathorne has long been recognized as one of Trent University's outstanding teachers. He is a richly deserving recipient of the Symons Award." Professor Eathorne has been teaching at Trent for the past 38 years, specializing in Contemporary Commonwealth literature and 20th Century studies, especially Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group. According to him, this award is a nice bookend to his distinguished career. Trent University's Convocation ceremonies will take place on Thursday, June 1 and Friday, June 2. Posted March 29, 2006
