Creating a Culture of Sustainable Development |

Mr. Caccia presented his lecture, "The Illusive Implementation of Sustainable Development" to the Environmental Science 100 class at Wenjack Theatre. It is unlikely any Canadian political party in power would remove current oil and gas subsidies so it can ensure electoral seats in Alberta and Saskatchewan, said Mr. Caccia. "That is the political reality." But the public can play an important role in changing that, he said. "When the public speaks up it can be very effective. Don't underestimate the value of writing a letter or making a phone call." Mr. Caccia added that creating environmental awareness can begin at home and in the classroom. Education is, "a very important way of getting the message across," in helping spur sustainable development, he said. Mr. Caccia is currently a senior fellow with the Institute for the Environment at the University of Ottawa. He is a former member of the House of Commons, representing the riding of Davenport between 1968 and 2004. He served at various times as Minister of Labour, Minister of the Environment, Parliamentary Secretary to the Solicitor General of Canada, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Manpower and Immigration. Integrating our economic, social and environmental values and redesigning Canada's tax and subsidy policy are just two things that would help create a culture of sustainable development, said Charles Caccia, a longtime Liberal MP and champion of the environment, during a visit to Trent University Tuesday, November 1.
