Ashley Fellow Visits Trent This Week

Ashley FellowDr. Randy Stoecker, a 2005/2006 Ashley Fellow, is making a preliminary visit to Trent University this week.

Prof. Stoecker, a Department of Sociology and Anthropology professor at the University of Toledo, will spend 10 days at Trent. The widely-respected expert on community-based research is being hosted by Catharine Parr Traill College.

His visit began on October 7 with a welcome reception at Traill College. He is visiting classes this week and will host workshops as well as make time to meet with students and faculty.

During his time at Trent, Prof. Stoecker will be working with the Trent Centre for Community Based Education (TCCBE) and an array of academic departments.

Dr. Tom Whillans, chair of Trent's Environmental and Resource Studies program, nominated Prof. Stoecker for the fellowship.

"Trent is poised at the forefront of an emergent university movement and is seeking ways of expanding the dialogue about innovative and best practices in community-based education," said Prof. Whillans. "Dr. Stoecker's fellowship will serve this end."

The Ashley Fellow is a visiting scholar who is a resident guest in one of Trent's five residential colleges. The Ashley Fellowship is funded by a bequest from the late Professor C.A. Ashley, a long-time friend of Trent University and an enthusiastic proponent of the role that informal contacts of college life can play in the academic pursuits of the university.

Prof. Stoecker will return to Trent in March. Those interested in meeting with Prof. Stoecker this week can contact the Trent Centre for Community Based Education at 743-0523 or Prof. Tom Whillans at 748-1011 ext. 1389.
