The seminars will be: Charlene Murphy, Anthropology – the Richardson Site Revisited: An Examination of the Floral Assemblage from a Late Pickering Village
The Trent University GSA has been hosting an ongoing seminar series at Catharine Parr Traill College. Over the years, the GSA Seminar Series has grown in popularity and has become one of the main venues for graduate students, from all disciplines, to gather in an academic and social setting and make a vital contribution to the academic community, said Colin Whitfield, president of the GSA. In recognition of this, the GSA would like to include a wider audience, consisting of the University and Peterborough communities. This year, the Series will be renamed The Thomas H.B. Symons Seminar Series on Graduate Student Research in honour of the founding president of Trent University. "Prof. Symons' dedication to higher education, student development and the realization of societal responsibility, as well as his keen interest in graduate students and their research aspirations, epitomize the ideal of the Seminar Series to bring graduate students from across the disciplines together for interaction and growth," said Mr. Whitfield. Each seminar features two student speakers – one each from the arts and humanities and the sciences – who give 20- to 30-minute presentations on their research projects followed by questions and discussion. "Graduate students enrolled at Trent University are involved in an array of programs across the humanities and social and natural sciences," he said. "This modest student population, incorporating extensive academic interests, affords unique opportunities in small group and community settings for sharing research and ideas over a broad spectrum. Students are encouraged to think about their research in a broader societal context, helping to provide a glimpse at the 'bigger picture'." Mr. Whitfield believes that formalizing the Seminar Series, will amplify the interest and involvement from all graduate students. "In turn, we look forward to more involvement from the University community and potentially the greater Peterborough community. The GSA hopes the expansion of the Seminar Series will generate interest in the wide-range of research being conducted at the University, and ensure the continued success of the Series." The Seminar Series will run monthly from September to March, and the top presenter will be chosen as the Symons Student Lecturer. The Thomas H.B. Symons Seminar Series on Graduate Student Research will run four times during the fall semester: September 21, October 19, November 16 and December 7. Posted September 19, 2005
