Connecting with Nature via Canoe at Trent

A brand new fleet of bright red canoes, purchased to add more outdoor education opportunities for Trent students, is now the focus of fun for hundreds of kids at Trent Summer Sports Camp (TSSC).

In previous years, TSSC would rent canoes or take campers to other locations for canoe expeditions. With the new canoes, campers aged 5 to 15 years old are learning about canoeing techniques and safety right on the Otonabee River that flows through Trent University's 1460-acre campus.

Canoeing is just one activity among countless opportunities for those who attend TSSC, from baseball, basketball, and badminton to tennis, touch rugby, and track and field. Program choices include:

Introsport

half-day program for campers 5 & 6 years (SK or grade 1)

JONA

full-day program for campers 7-9 years (grades 2 - 4)

Multisport

full-day program for campers 7-12 years (grades 2 - 7)

Explorers

full-day program for campers 11-13 years (grades 6 - 8)

Adventuresport

full-day program for campers 13-15 years (grades 8-10)

Leader-in-Training (LIT)

full-day program for campers who have completed grade 9 and Adventuresport (or an equivalent camp program)

The popular camp, which typically books to capacity by early April, currently employs over 30 staff, including 19 Trent students or alumni.

The new canoes were made possible by a new student levy to improve the athletic facilities at Trent. New paddles, lifejackets, a canoe rack and tripping shed were purchased with generous donations from camp families and camp supporters. Trent students will have the opportunity to use the canoes during clinics and workshops this fall.
