Business Admin Grads On-line! |

Trent University Business Administration graduates are unique, innovative, intelligent and dedicated, as demonstrated by their latest initiative - www.trentbusinessgrads.ca. The Web site, recently launched by members of the Trent Business Graduate Portfolio Committee, profiles program graduates for potential employers. The so called Portfolio Project also takes the form of a business card-sized CD, which is being sent to more than 500 employers, encouraging them to consider those profiled in their hiring decisions. "The idea of creating a showcase of our business graduates was suggested to us in September by our new human resources professor, Ed Ng, who had experience with similar projects during his time at McMaster University. The Trent Business Students' Association agreed that this project should be lead by a committee of graduating students interested in advancing the awareness of our program and the quality of students graduating from the program," says Brooke Munnings, Business Administration graduate and Portfolio Project co-ordinator, adding the Web site and CD-ROM format was chosen based on its fit with the program's philosophy and due to its ease of distribution and low cost to implement and maintain. The Web site and CD feature the condensed resumes of approximately 40 2005 Business Administration graduates along with photos and testimonials from Trent professors and the director of the program as well as from Prof. Joel Bakan, author of The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power and Just Words: Constitutional Rights and Social Wrongs, who visited Trent from the University of British Columbia. Student profiles are divided into eight categories and include a personal statement, work experience, extracurricular activities, educational highlights, academic focus, additional skills and interests, career interests and contact information. Resumes are also categorized by key 27 career interest categories ranging from sales and sports and recreation to marketing, management consulting and e-commerce. "We are very excited about this opportunity to showcase our 2005 business administration graduates to Canadian businesses. Like most business schools from across the country we have a diverse group of graduates interested in careers in various fields of work. However, unlike other business programs our students have completed their business studies with an emphasis not only on modern business concepts and practices, but also with an understanding of ethical issues facing today's mangers and executives and the social and environmental impacts of business decisions," states the students' message on the Web site and CD. "Many of our graduates are interested in pursuing careers in mainstream sectors of business but many are also looking to work with not-for-profit organizations or in positions focusing on environmental and social sustainability." "We are very impressed with the quality of the finished product," says Ms. Munnings. "Both the Web site and the CD reflect the high-calibre graduates emerging from the business program. We have spoken with members of future graduating classes and they are enthusiastic about building upon this initiative in future years. We hope to receive positive feedback from potential employers mainly through increased awareness of Trent's Business Administration program. "I would like to thank all of the volunteers of the portfolio committee, generous sponsors and the students who agreed to participate in this innovative project. All invested a great deal of support, trust and energy into the completion of the Trent Business Graduate Portfolio." Posted May 26, 2005
