The Art and Craft of Travel Writing Instructor: Jonathan Bennett is a novelist, short story writer and poet. The author of three books, his writing has appeared in many periodicals and journals including: the Globe and Mail, Quill and Quire, Antipodes, and Descant. An experienced writing instructor, Jonathan is originally from Sydney, Australia. "Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown," wrote novelist E.M. Forester in his 1910 novel, Howard's End. "Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine, and to them, alas, we return." While some travel to re-invent or refresh themselves, others take journeys to become wondrously lost. Yet for all there comes a day when we must turn homebound. This inescapable return is why so many of us write when we travel. To preserve experience, thoughts, sights, sounds, names, dates, feelings, and the essential change we undergo, we keep journals, scribble in notebooks, snap pictures, and write letters home. But must this raw material languish, forgotten in a drawer? Publishable travel writing happens not on the road, but back at home. Through re-writing and work-shopping, students will learn the art and craft of travel writing. They will learn how to turn rough journal entries and magical memories into moving narratives using elements of characterization, plot, dialogue, and research. Class Limit: 12 6 Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:00pm Dates: May 19 to June 23
