Athletics Construction "Kicks Off" |
||
The ceremonial kick off of phase one of Trent University's athletic development plan took place the morning of April 21 on the Symons Campus construction site. Student athletes, student government representatives, contractors involved in the project, Trent staff members and President Bonnie Patterson celebrated the milestone. Work began on the site on April 11 in preparation for the construction of a new artificial turf field. The $2.1 million Phase 1 upgrade to the athletic facilities is a result of a partnership between students and administration, in which the student body voted in 2004 to provide financial support of a master plan to improve athletic facilities at Trent. "The partnership between students and the administration will provide our students with access to the top quality facilities and services," said Bill Byrick, Director of Athletics. "By creating excellence in our athletic operations and creating incentives for students to come to Trent, we are creating a new sense of ownership and new partnerships with the local community." Part of the business plan will see an athletics reserve created so that there would be adequate funding on hand to replace the artificial turf in 12 years without an additional student levy. Phase one of the athletics project includes construction of a stadium with artificial turf, lighting, and bleacher seating for 1,000. Adjacent to the Athletics Complex and close to the stadium will be a multi-purpose pavilion. On the east bank, two natural turf fields and a softball diamond will be constructed and an outdoor recreation area with equipment will be developed. These facilities will be constructed over the next five years with the new stadium field and track ready for use by August 26, 2005. Timeline: Phase 1 Fall / Winter 2002-03
