Summer Explorations Recognized by the Peterborough Historical Society |

As part of SECC, visitors from all over the world have the opportunity to learn from local scholars and visit local attractions, which has earned the program the Samuel Armour Award from the Peterborough Historical Society. The award was presented to Mr. Metcalfe and Melanie Sedge, continuing education coordinator, on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library. The award recognizes the involvement and exposure of students to local historical opportunities and programs and/or development of curriculum based on local history. "Over the last seven years of the program, there has been huge involvement in the community," says Mr. Metcalfe. "We take an academic approach to the region and complement that with experiential learning and field trips." Each year, program participants visit the Haliburton Forest, the Lift Locks, Lang Pioneer Village, Curve Lake and Serpent Mounds, among other attractions. Participants are often teachers or professors who go on to develop curriculum based on their experiences in the region, adds Mr. Metcalfe. "This is great international exposure for Peterborough and for Trent." Already this year, there has been interest from countries such as China, India, Nigeria and Poland. The program takes place during the last two weeks in August. New this year, is an addition to the program in the summer field course Teaching Canada. The course involves one week of classroom lectures and one week of participation in the SECC program. For more information and to learn how to register, visit www.trentu.ca/secc. Even if you are not an SECC participant, community members can take part through the Community Night on August 24. SECC will be hosting a square dance for SECC participants and community members. All are welcome to take part in this night of square dancing with the Otonabee Old Tyme Fiddlers, well-known caller, Mike Parnell, and refreshments.
