Trent's First Response Team Tops

Members of the Trent University Emergency First Response Team (TUEFRT) were quick to take action when it came to mock first-aid scenarios at the 11th annual National Conference of Campus Emergency Responders (NCCER) held in late February at Queen's University.

Having practiced for the competition for more than a month, the two Trent teams placed in first and fifth place among 15 other first response teams. The challenge included seven scenarios - among them, second-degree burns, drug overdoses and a dog attack. The first-place team, Give'er, received a trophy and medals at an evening award ceremony. The Trent team was also recognized by the Association of Campus Emergency First Response Teams (ACERT) for its groundbreaking work.

Program Coordinator Patrick McColm explains that Trent's team worked this year to increase its visibility and as a result, responded to twice as many calls for service. TUEFRT has also worked closely with Fleming College's campus response team FAST, helping it develop in its infancy. The Trent team was also recognized for further developing its relationship with campus security and hence, University administration. All 28 volunteer team members played a role in these, and other successes, added Mr. McColm.

TUEFRT is volunteer first-aid team that operates 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week on campus. Last year Trent hosted the National Conference of Campus Emergency Responders, which provides an opportunity for first response teams to network and exchange information. This year, 16 Trent delegates attended the Kingston conference.

“A great time was had by all who attended,” said Mr. McColm. “Many great friendships and memories were created. This year's NCCER will be especially memorable for TUEFRT.”

Trent also brought home an award created by Queen's, the host team, for the most spirited and welcoming team. In addition, two of the team's executive members were voted onto the ACERT board of directors, which will ensure that Trent will remain active among its peer first response teams. Mr. McColm was voted the new Vice President Communications, and Matt Harris was voted onto the Board of Directors of ACERT.

The Trent team executive is made up of Training Coordinators Matt Harris and Tara Kelly, Communications Coordinator Karen McQuade, Team Administrator Chris Smith, Personal Coordinator Seth Rietkoetter, and Program Coordinator Mr. McColm.

Weekend competitors included Shanon Gasser, Matthew Martin, and Andrew Marchand on the team Tongue Studs, and Jay Malandrino, Sara Holmes, and Kris Harrop as team Give'er.
