Trent University's Continuing Education Department is pleased to offer four new courses starting in the coming weeks; they include Writing for Children with instructor Ted Staunton, Coping with Cognitive Impairment: When Alzheimer's Disease Affects your Family with Dr. Samia Rizk, Songwriter's Workshop 101 with instructor Elyse Bruce and The Virtual Speculator: Real-time Stock Market Simulation with instructor Steve Austrin. Writing for Children Instructor Ted Staunton has been entertaining readers of all ages for over 20 years. His many publications include more than 25 picture books, novels and non-fiction books. Mr. Staunton's novel Two False Moves earned him the CLA Outstanding Children's Book of the Year Award. Join Mr. Staunton for a chance to explore the wide range of writing for children, from picture books to teen novels; fantasy to fact books in a workshop-style course where the most valuable tool is your own childhood experience. Find your voice, find your stories and get some practical publishing tips along the way. Classes take place Monday evenings from 6:30 - 9 p.m. from February 28 to April 11 (no class on March 14) at Titles Bookstore. The course fee is $159 or $143 for students, seniors and alumni. Registration is limited to 20 students. Coping with Cognitive Impairment: When Alzheimer's disease affects your family Instructor Samia Rizk is a family physician with a background in Internal Medicine. She has designed and instructed courses in Emergency Medicine, Community Medicine and Environmental Health. When someone you love is affected with Alzheimer's disease, the entire family is impacted. This course will discuss the role of the family and caregiver in understanding and overcoming the challenges and frustrations associated with elderly people who have developed cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's disease. Topics to be explored include; the cognitive screen; questions about orientation and memory; hearing, vision and cognitive or communication difficulties; and types of cognitive impairment and their relationship with depression and delirium. The role of medicine in dealing with Alzheimer's will be covered along with the basic skills that can be applied to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in coping with your affected loved ones. Classes take place Monday evenings from 7 - 9 p.m. from February 28 to April 18 (no classes on March 14 or 28). The course fee is $139 or $125 for students, seniors and alumni. Songwriter's Workshop 101 Instructor Elyse Bruce is a professional composer-singer-songwriter-performer. Her dynamic career in the arts has taken her to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean as well as across North America. Ms. Bruce has 25 years of experience in the arts coordinating, marketing and promoting artistic endeavours. Chopin loved Jazz, Schubert loved R & B, Beethoven was all about heavy metal and Ravel was into New Age Instrumentals. This six-week course will introduce the roots of classical music and how classical composers fit into our musical world and genres. Four classes will provide a workshop environment that will assist each participant in creating a commercially?]viable song. Tools, techniques and tricks for promoting your finished song to publishers and recording artists will be discussed in the final class. Other opportunities and avenues for royalty income will also be covered. Classes take place Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9 p.m. from March 1 to April 12 (no classes on March 15). The course fee is $139 or $125 for students, seniors and alumni. The Virtual Speculator: Real-time Stock Market Simulation Instructor Steve Austrin, M.Ed, knows the ups and downs of financing. His years as the owner/operator of a large scale cash crop farm also gave him expertise in the commodities and futures markets. Test your market savvy and your nerve in a risk-free virtual stock market. Buy and sell your favorite stocks based on real-time market prices and costs but without risking a single cent. All participants start with the same bankroll of virtual money but what happens next is up to each member of the group. Your objective will be to attain enough market awareness during the sessions so that your trades result in gains to your account. Participants can compare their own progress with their colleagues from a course web site. Although the group will meet weekly to explore trading concepts, all virtual trading will be done online, therefore access to the Internet is a prerequisite of this course. This course is a non-technical introduction to stock market concepts. No previous trading experience is required. Virtual trading will be limited to stocks listed on the major Canadian and American stock exchanges. Bonds, mutual funds and other trading instruments will not be discussed. Classes take place Thursday evenings from 7 - 9 p.m. on March 3, 10, 24 and 31. The course fee is $119 or $109 for students, seniors and alumni.
