Leading Cultural Historian to Visit Trent University from l'université de Nantes

Trent University will host an exclusive lecture by French cultural historian, Professor Patrice Allain on Tuesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at The Pit at Lady Eaton College.

Professor Allain is Maître de Conférences and the Director of the Comunications Department at the l'université de Nantes. His lecture at Trent, which will be entirely in French, is free and open to the public, courtesy of the Modern Languages department at Trent University and the Service Culturel de l'ambassade de France d'Ottawa. His talk, entitled Nantes surréaliste: une construction de la mythologie bretonnienne, will focus on the French poet André Breton and the birth of the Surrealist movement.

Professor Allain's research focuses on surrealism in the 1920's and the importance of Nantes in the inception of the literary and artistic avant-garde movement of that period. He has published on French Dada and surrealist poets such as Jacques Vaché, Benjamin Péret, Jacques Viot and Claude Cahun. He has also published on Marcel Schwob and Jean Sarment.

He has organized a series of exhibitions :

Trent University, itself, has a long history with l'université de Nantes, sending 12 students abroad in Nantes every year for the past 25 years.

Professor Allain will be at Trent the week of February 14 where he will also give a lecture to students of the Modern Languages department. The following two weeks, he will be in Ottawa working with Trent University Professor Yves Thomas of the department of Modern Languages on the manuscripts of the surrealist poet Jacques Baron in the surrealist archives of the Morisset library of the University of Ottawa. Professor Allain will also be giving a paper on Nantes and surrealism in Ottawa on March 2 and another paper at Queen's University on Jacques Viot and exoticism on March 8.
